The center of Syracuse, New York is cut into four parts by the intersection of two interstate highways. The construction of I-81 destroyed an historic neighborhood and remains a painful memory for many residents.

State officials have recently raised the possibility of replacing the elevated I-81 with a ground-level expressway.

I wanted to explore the part of Syracuse that exists under the overpasses -- mostly parking lots, with some forlorn benches. I discovered an unexpected beauty in the area, despite the plain concrete construction and its dark history
